It’s going to happen – you need to be somewhere looking good, and you need to be there fast! You grab your favorite bike, but then look out the window to discover it is raining. It’s easy to see how this story might end, but it doesn’t have to be that way! Solutions ranging from simple to stylish fenders will keep the mud off your pants and the smile on your face – even during the grayest of days.

Did you know...?

Bicycle Fenders

Did you know that a bicycle fender benefits your bicycle as much as it does you?

Cycling in wet weather can coat your drive train, tires and seat post in a thick layer of mud and grime that is an absolute pain to scrub off. If you don't get all the mud off, your bike's durability may be affected in the long run. A fender is a worthwhile investment for all the trouble it'll save you.

The Simplest Solution - Mud Guared

Bicycle Fenders

Like many people, I appreciated the unadulterated simplicity of the bike - free from a bicycle water bottle cage, bicycle lights, bicycle reflectors, and fenders. It wouldn't be until later that I would realize how important these items were!

After some unsavory experiences riding around in the rain, I recognized the need for some way to keep the mud off of my cycling clothes. The first solution for primitive fenders is quite simple - pieces of plastic attached with Velcro (or otherwise affixed) to the down tube and seat post of my bike:

This solution works best for mountain bikes - the aim of mountain bike fenders is not so much to keep mud off your clothes, but to keep distracting mud out of your face! For commuter bikes and road racing bicycles, there are other solutions that are more suited to those styles of bikes.

Something More Elaborate

Bicycle Fenders

Different bicycle fenders suit different bikes. For your commuter bike or road bike, I would highly recommend a more permanent and elegant addition to your frame. This will assure you can ride about in the rain in style. Fenders suited for road and commuter bikes not only follow the curvature of the bicycle wheels, but are also longer in order to catch water kicked up from your bicycle tires.

Some companies make a very dependable pair of hard plastic fenders, while others offer steel fenders that are perfectly suited to retro-styled bicycles. Aside from the slightly different style of these two types of fenders, one might ask if the metal fenders aren't better quality then the plastic fenders. I have owned the plastic fenders shown above for over six years, and have yet to encounter any problems.

Combining Bicycle Fenders and Racks

But what if you have racks installed on your bike, and you want to add also bicycle panniers?
No problem!
Most commercial fenders can be installed so that they fit effectively underneath bicycle racks. With fenders installed and waterproof panniers strapped to these racks, all that is left to consider is making sure you yourself wear the proper cycling clothes to stay comfortable on rainy days.
