I am not a bicycle mechanic, but still, I have been using my own set of bicycle repair tools to fix my bicycle for as long as I can remember, and every repair tool has a story to tell. After you buy your first bicycle and start riding on it, you don’t just develop an attachment to the bike, but you also create an extension to the bicycle tools. No matter what kind of bicycle you own, I bet the following tools will always come in handy. So what are the tools that you need?

Chain tool is essential for installing and modifying your chain. A standard version can go for little as 7 dollars and usually this does the job fine. However, high-end models can go for as much as $100!

Locking pliers (also known as Vice Pliers): When you need to adjust something on your bike, a locking plier is next to indispensable. I would recommend a smaller-sized plier but you can buy larger models if necessary. This usually costs around $15.

Three-way hex wrench: I would highly recommend that you add this to your set of bicycle tools. This allows you to work on virtually every bolt in a seamless motion. It is also very cheap – most models cost about $8. Note: keep in mind that the most common Hex bolts in your bike are 5 and 6 millimeters, so get a hex key that includes those.

A set of Allen wrench screwdrivers: Every usable bike that I know comes with a whole variety of screws, so owning a good set of screwdrivers is just commonsense.

Tapered hand reamer: This can be a godsend sometimes. Just poke this into an undersized hole and turn a few times to make it bigger. Don’t over-use it though; it’s not the solution for everything. Most chain tools are also very cheap.

Pedal Wrench: The pedal is sometimes the most ignored part of the bike but it is very important. A pedal wrench is undoubtedly an essential. You could get a really good one for about $25.

Column cutter: If you want to cut your seat post or handlebar, then this is the tool you need. A really good model will cost you around $20 but it’s worth the investment. However, this is probably something not everyone would want to add to their toolbox.

Lubrication gun is perfect for re-greasing small or out-of-reach bicycle parts. This also means you won’t be bathing your bike in grease. This one costs about $10.
