Cycling the Via Francigena

The Spirit of the Via Francigena

Our 2024 journey followed the Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrimage route that has led travelers to Rome for over a millennium. Having previously conquered the route from Bolzano to Venice—pedaling through Lake Garda and the historic streets of Verona—we were eager to experience the legendary rolling hills of Tuscany and the volcanic landscapes of Lazio.

Day 1 (May 27)

Lucca to Signa

Day 1 Lucca

We officially began our ride at the foot of Lucca’s magnificent 16th-century walls. This first stage took us east through the fertile Arno River valley. It was a gentle introduction to the terrain, passing through small Tuscan hamlets before reaching the peaceful retreat of Il Borgo di Villa Castelletti in Signa.

Day 2 (May 28)

Florence & The Towers of San Gimignano

Day 2 Florence

Leaving Signa, we rode into the heart of Florence. Crossing the Ponte Vecchio was a bucket-list moment, though the late-May crowds were a stark contrast to the quiet trails. We pushed south into the hills, passing the skyline of San Gimignano, the “Medieval Manhattan,” before descending into Colle di Val d’Elsa for a rest at Hotel Palazzo San Lorenzo.

Day 3 (May 29)

Siena & The Val d’Orcia

Day 3 Siena

In Siena, we navigated narrow stone streets to reach the majestic Piazza del Campo. It was here we met a lovely couple from Norway, a reminder of the international community on this path. The afternoon took us through the postcard-perfect Val d’Orcia, ending in the ancient thermal village of Bagno Vignoni at Albergo Le Terme.

Day 4 (May 30)

Mechanical Drama & Lake Bolsena

Day 4 Drama

The journey tested our resolve when my motor failed 10km from the finish. While the others rode on, I flagged down a kind local in a van. Easy Bike Rent proved their worth, driving a replacement bike all the way from Rome that night to Hotel Lido on the volcanic Lake Bolsena.

Day 5 (May 31)

The Best Hospitality: Bassano Romano

Day 5 B&B

This stage led us to Bassano Romano. We stayed at B&B Le Palme, which became the highlight of our accommodations. The host was incredibly professional and kind, making us feel like family and providing the perfect rest before our final entry into the capital.

The Arrival in the Eternal City

Day 6 Rome

Rolling into Rome as a team was a triumphant end to our 420km loop. We officially completed our pilgrimage at the Camplus Hotel Roma Centro. From the walls of Lucca to the heart of the Roman Empire, it was a journey of history and friendship we will never forget.
